The remote Croatian island of Vis is as impregnable as a Bond villain's lair and as beautiful as Capri before the tourists. Despite its picture postcard beauty, its olive groves and vines, its historical ruins and deserted beaches, it has virtually no tourists. It only opened to tourism in recent years and there are no big hotels and no resorts. Outside of July and August when many Italians visit, you can truly escape the crowds - Vis Island is really ‘the Mediterranean as it once was' The interior of the island is planted with vineyards producing some excellent wines - indeed, the wines of Vis are acknowledged as amongst the best of Dalmatia. The island is surrounded by crystal-clear waters rich in marine life, and the many restaurants and konobas have the freshest of fish on their menus, always an attraction to the visiting yachtsmen from all over the world who moor in Vis harbour. The tiny neighbouring island of Bisevo has a spectacular Blue Grotto, which can put Capri in the shade. Between 11am and noon the sun's rays pass through an underwater opening to bathe the interior in an unearthly blue light. Beneath the crystal-blue water, rocks glimmer in silver and pink to a depth of 16m. Normally boats stop for a 10 minutes swim. A visit to the Blue Grotto is a unique and unforgettable experience.
